Skin Cancer and Black Skin
In this video, we aim to educate people of colour on the dangers of skin cancer, as well as address the systemic racism that is within the field of dermatology. There is an obvious lack of representation of darker skin tones (types IV-VI) in medical textbooks and this video aims to address these issues.
There are many dangerous misconceptions about the relationship between skin cancer and how it affects darker skin. In this video, we aim to educate people of colour on the dangers of skin cancer, as well as address the systemic racism that is within the field of dermatology. There is an obvious lack of representation of darker skin tones (types IV-VI) in medical textbooks and this video aims to address these issues. The video then explains the ABCDE method of diagnosing melanomas and how this may be harder to diagnose on darker skin tones. The video ends off explaining preventative measures as well as self-advocacy advice to aid in reducing the risks of melanoma.
